Karl Shallowhom, M.S., CASAC is the President of Shallowhom Consulting. He is a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Karl has worked in the field of addiction and mental health for over 18 years. He was a senior counselor-addictions specialist in a mental health clinic at Horizon Health Services for many years conducting assessments and providing individual and group counseling. Karl has extensively delivered workshops for a wide range of organizations. Karl had a 12-year career in the field of higher education and is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Daemen College Social Work Program.

Karl is a Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor (Adult, Youth, Veterans, Older Adult, Public Safety). He Is the author of Working on Wellness: A Practical Guide to Mental Health, has been a contributing writer and blogger for BP magazine, HeatthyPlace.com and The Mighty, and coordinates and writes for the United Church of Christ blog The Journey. He is the Chair of the Erie County Anti Stigma Coalition, and serves as Chair of Affiliate Relations for the Mental Health Association in New York State Board of Directors. Karl is also on the Erie County Mental Hygiene Community Services Board, and the Boards of Housing Options Made Easy and the Just Buffalo Literary Center. In addition to Karl’s professional experience, he has 38 years of lived experience with mental health and substance use disorders and continuous recovery.
