Description

We are experiencing an unprecedented shift in the ways in which treatment is provided in behavioral health programs as well as for private practitioners as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar will focus on the emerging issues associated with substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, in particular opiates, and COVID-19. It will explore the risk factors associated with having a coronavirus diagnosis, ways in which federal policies are changing to accommodate telehealth to address the gaps in treatment for SUD that are currently being experienced, and how the treatment of opioid disorders is being addressed to accommodate individuals who are unable to access medication assisted treatment (MAT) by traditional means. The program will also include tips to minimize burnout and continue providing high quality services to clients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least three risk factors, exacerbated by and unique to the COVID-19 pandemic, that are associated with relapse and overdose.
  2. Discuss new operational protocols for the delivery of SUD treatment, including MAT, consistent with regulatory changes.
  3. Describe how buprenorphine is being provided to individuals at home.
  4. Identify at least three examples of burnout and what to do in order to continue providing high quality services to clients.

Research:  Although research is first being conducted on the Impact of COVID-19, federal agencies have begun sharing information on the impact on mental health and substance use. The National Institute of Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have published guidelines and implications of substance use during the times of COVID-19. The Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network (MHTTC), a part of SAMHSA has published Tools for Behavioral Health Professionals During a Public Health Crisis.

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.
