A Trauma-Informed Approach to Motivational Interviewing Certificate Program

Required courses:

Beyond the Basics: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Motivational Interviewing (Intermediate Level)

Description: Begin with an introduction to the principles, strategies, and the spirit of the Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to help clients build commitment and reach a decision to change problematic behaviors.Continue your journey and go beyond the basics of motivational interviewing to explore a trauma-informed approach to motivational interviewing that will prepare you to work with some of your most challenging and trauma-exposed clients in taking action steps towards their goals. Advanced skills will be taught through a trauma lens that can be implemented during all phases of treatment and will highlighting response to conflict and the experiences of marginalized populations.

This certificate program is comprised of the following two courses:

  • A Motivational Interviewing Approach to Client Behavior Change
  • Beyond the Basics: A Trauma-Informed Approach to Motivational Interviewing (Intermediate Level)

Goals of the certificate program:

  • Describe Motivational Interviewing theories and concepts
  • Apply Motivational Interviewing techniques to your practice
  • Practice moving through the stages of a Motivational Interviewing conversation
  • Practice giving advice in a trauma-informed Motivational-Interviewing consistent style

Research:  Select current research on MI can be found at US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.

Todd Sage, PhD, LMSW, MAC, CASAC II, MINT, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UB School of Social Work. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and completed his dissertation data on the effective training of Motivational Interviewing. He teaches Motivational Interviewing in the UBSSW MSW program and also serves as an international trainer. Todd encourages the use of Motivational Interviewing at the Lighthouse Free Clinic where he serves as a proctor for MSW students who are gaining practice experience.

Melanie Sage, PhD, MSW, LICSW Related Seminars and Products


Melanie Sage, PhD, MSW, LICSW, Part-time Adjunct Instructor at the UB School of Social Work. Her research and scholarship areas include the use of technology in social work education and practice, and the intersections of technology use and child welfare practice. Melanie has taught Motivational Interviewing for ten years to a variety of audiences, and has helped agencies integrate Motivational Interviewing into agency practice using coaching, change management, and implementation science principles.  She co-trains with Motivational Interviewing with Todd online for various community agencies and education programs.

Strongly Encouraged Hardware
- Webcam or mobile device with a camera for interacting in course activities.


Internet Connection
- A stable Internet connection of 56K or greater is required. (However, please note that a 56K connection may degrade the quality of your experience.)

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Live Trainings (in-person and online) – Half and One Day: Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 10 business days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee.

Participants who cancel a half-day training (less than 5 hours) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Participants who cancel a one-day training (5 hours or more) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Live Training (in-person, online and hybrid) – Multi-Day: There is a $50 non-refundable deposit for all multi-day trainings. Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 30 calendar days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit.

Participants who cancel less than 30 calendar days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued with 5 or less business days’ notice before the start of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Self-Study Training: Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards: Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Substitute Attendance: If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Late Policy: Participants should plan on arriving prior to the start of the training to allow time for sign-in, registration, and training introductions. Participants arriving 20 minutes or more after the scheduled start time or departing 20 minutes or more prior to the scheduled end time will not receive any Continuing Education Credit and/or certificates associated with the training.  

Check Refunds: Check refunds may take up to 4 weeks to process. 

UB Cancelled Trainings: If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full. Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed the training may still be taking place. Please contact the Office of Continuing Education if you have any questions or concerns regarding whether or not a training is still being held.
