Course Description:

This online course offers the training in primarily a video format. All course handouts can be viewed online, saved to your computer or printed. The course offers a foundation of information regarding Trauma-Informed Care, veterans and military culture. Some men and women who have served in the military have experienced significant traumatic events, and at times life changing events. This course offers knowledge of the military culture and how the trauma effects veterans. All levels of organization staff will benefit from this course in learning to recognize, understand, and help veterans who have experienced military related trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish elements of the basic military culture;
  • Recognize how trauma effects veterans and their families;
  • Identify and understand how each component of the Trauma-Informed Care model can be implemented with veterans and military culture;
  • Apply the content to help veterans transition and readjust in their communities.

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction to military culture
  2. Common practices that retraumatize veterans
  3. Implications and prevalence of trauma with veterans and within the military culture
  4. Complete the required readings located in the Materials section of the course site.

Handouts:  If it makes it easier for you to follow the course videos and take notes, we recommend you print your handouts from the Materials section and have them available as you watch the video modules. PowerPoint’s and other handouts are in the Materials tab of the course. They can be saved to your computer or printed.

Patrick Welch, PhD, Sgt. USMC (Ret) is the Director of the Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services at Daemen College in Buffalo, New York, where he also serves as an adjunct professor in their School of Social Work. Awarded a Purple Heart for combat service in Vietnam, and former Director of the Erie County Veterans Service Agency, Dr. Welch has made it his mission to ensure that veterans receive all benefits which they have earned. Dr. Welch has years of experience in both the public and private sector and is uniquely knowledgeable about the many programs available to veterans and their families.
