Course Description:

This online course offers the training in primarily a video format. All course handouts can be viewed online, saved to your computer or printed. The course offers a foundation of information regarding implementation of Trauma-Informed Care in the children’s mental health field. This course is for a variety of staff including doctors, nurses, receptionists, administration, case workers, and other professionals and volunteers who interface with the children’s mental health system. The benefits of implementing a Trauma-Informed approach in the children’s mental health field are improved symptomology for children. The benefits are not limited to this; rather they provide many supports and help to empower all involved.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize how trauma plays a role in children’s mental health;
  • Explain the implications that trauma has for children;
  • Identify specific ways the children’s mental health system can benefit from implementing Trauma-Informed Care;
  • Identify ways to create a Trauma-Informed children’s mental health system.

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care in the children’s mental health system
  2. Trauma: its implications and prevalence with children
  3. Common practices in the children’s mental health field that can be retraumatizing
  4. Complete the required readings in the Materials section of the course site.

Handouts:  If it makes it easier for you to follow the course videos and take notes, we recommend you print your handouts from the Materials section and have them available as you watch the video modules. PowerPoint’s and other handouts are in the Materials tab of the course. They can be saved to your computer or printed.

Maria Picone, LCSW-R Related Seminars and Products


Maria Picone, LCSW-R, has over 35 years of social work experience working with individuals, couples and families. This includes 25 years of experience as a supervisor. Maria is currently the Director of the Family and Community Services Department at Catholic Charities of Buffalo. She oversees the Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) Program, an evidence-based, intensive family treatment for delinquent and seriously behavior-disordered youth who are at risk of placement or incarceration. She also shepherds School Intervention Services. Additionally, as chair of the Trauma Continuum of Services at Catholic Charities, she coordinates the trauma training program there. Her areas of interest are working with families and youth, evidence-based practice, and clinical supervision. Maria has been involved in developing and nurturing interagency collaborations of Family Resource Centers in our community. Since the mid 80’s, Maria has been an adjunct professor at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, teaching interventions courses including Interventions with Families, Interventions with Couples, Advanced Standing Seminar and Interventions I & II. She also specializes in teaching clinical supervision and is an instructor with the School’s Office of Continuing Education.
