Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is one of the early systemic Family Therapy models that helped establish family therapy as a mainstream treatment approach. In the 1990-the 2000s, FFT gained the title of an "Evidence-Based" treatment and was at the center at the beginning of the Evidence-Based practice movement that revolutionized Juvenile Justice treatment. Twenty years later, is one of the premiere treatment models for adolescent conduct problems, drug use, and mental health concerns for youth in child welfare & foster care. Today FFT adaptions in Foster Care (FFT-FC) and in Child Welfare Prevention Services are being used around the US.

FFT was recently listed on the US Family First Prevention Act as a well-supported treatment for use in Child-Welfare As an "Evidence-Based" FFT has evolved to fit diverse community contexts and the unique clinical needs of families in these contexts. Whether in a mental health setting, a child welfare setting, or in therapeutic foster care, FFT uses a family focused relational “lens” and a specific phase-based map of change. These adaptations allow FFT brings together the best of our science, theory, and clinical practice when implemented in community settings, allowing each to be constantly tested with complex families in difficult settings with a wide range of problems.

This makes FFT far from just a theoretical guide but a practical, comprehensive, clinical approach for helping families in natural community settings. FFT is also unique in how it leverages technology to promote Evidence-Based decision making and to allow client voices to enter treatment through measurement feedback. Our Evidence-Based decision-making process makes it possible to integrate real time family feedback along with therapists their own focused reflections to provide information to help creatively craft treatment and session plans.

In this way, treatment increasingly fits the unique nature of the client and lets FFT be applied in increasingly helpful ways that “fit” the client. This workshop will illustrate the use of Functional Family Therapy in a variety of contexts including mental health, child welfare and therapeutic foster care. Using video tapes, and case examples the focus will be on the unique application of the core principles of FFT to complex mental health problems of young. We will illustrate Functional Family Therapy and how its integrated measurement feedback system can help guide treatment, adjust treatment, improve outcomes, and further engage clients in treatment.

Thomas L. Sexton is a Professor Emeritus at Indiana University and a renowned expert on family-based treatment interventions. He is one of the developers of Functional Family Therapy (FFT, FFT-Foster Care & FFT-TCM), Evidence-Based family therapy programs for families in justice, mental health, and child welfare systems. Sexton’s significant contribution to the field of family psychology focused on the effectiveness of Family Psychology and Therapy in community settings, Evidence-Based practices, translational science, and the integration of psychological practice and technology through the development of measurement feedback systems to bring research and practice together in tools for treatment models, therapists, and organizations.

Sexton developed the Care4, a software program designed to help make every clinician their local scientist improve clinical outcomes. He has authored or co-authored ten books, over thirty book chapters, and fifty articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He is the author of Functional Family Therapy in Clinical Practice (2010) and the Handbook of Family Therapy (2003 & 2015). Sexton served as Editor for the Journal of Couple and Family Psychology: Research and Practice.

He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Diplomate in Couple and Family Psychology (ABPP). He served as President of the American Board of Professional Psychology Couple and Family Psychology Board (2012-2014) and President of the Society for Family Psychology, Division 43 of the American Psychological Association (2009). Throughout the years, he has received numerous awards, among which was the prestigious Family Psychologist of the Year award, which was bestowed to him by the Society of Family Psychology of the American Psychological Association in 2011. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Diplomate in Couple and Family Psychology (ABPP).

Marta Anderson, LCSW is the role of Director of Implementation and Quality Assurance. She has extensive experience as an FFT Therapist, a Senior FFT Consultant, and direct service provider implementing FFT in the real world. Marta has working knowledge of Implementation Science and what is required to implement Functional Family Therapy across multiple contexts, cultures and geographic locations. Marta is a co-author of the book, titled Functional Family Therapy: An evolving evidence-based treatment for contemporary family issues.

Marta began her career in Child Welfare in New York City working with families to reduce abuse and neglect and preserve family stability. Marta’s clinical training is in Functional Family Therapy and she was a member of the first Functional Family Therapy team utilized in the Child Welfare setting in New York City. Marta has extensive experience managing Functional Family Therapy programs and held the position of Vice President of Prevention at The New York Foundling, overseeing multiple programs implementing Functional Family Therapy and serving over 2,000 families per year.  Marta also held the role of Vice President of Foster Care at The New York Foundling, using her experience in preserving family stability to support the reunification and permanency planning of children in Foster Care. Marta Anderson, then transitioned her focus from directly overseeing Functional Family Therapy Programs to developing other service providers and government entities in implementing Evidence Based Practices. Marta held the position of the Vice President of the Implementation Support Center (ISC) at The New York Foundling, working with community-based organizations and governmental entities in the U.S. and abroad to implement effective, Evidence-Based initiatives. Marta then joined the FFT Partners team in 2020 and holds the position of Senior Clinical Consultant, Director of Implementation & Quality Assurance.

- Attend the entire course.  Zoom attendance is used to verify viewing requirements. Zoom can take up to 48 hours to confirm attendance. Participation in small group activities is required.

- Document participation codes and respond to poll questions. Single letter participation codes will be displayed throughout the training. Participants must input the codes in the orange "Evaluation & Certificate" button. Participants must record at least 75% of the codes correctly and participate in at least 75% of the polls.
