This course will focus on using Dialectical Behavior Therapy theory and interventions to assess and intervene with problematic behavior patterns including behaviors associated with suicidality and self harm, substance use, and impaired functioning. Marsha Linehan’s theory, psychoeducational material, and phases of treatment will be reviewed and practiced with didactic and experiential methods.

Learning Objectives:

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.    Identify Bio-social theory aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
2.    Identify maladaptive attempts of coping in a conceptual construct. 
3.    Develop a person-centered treatment plan addressing all functional areas in which DBT objectives and interventions can be applied. 
4.    Apply DBT techniques during phase oriented treatment of behaviors (starting with highest risk behaviors). 
5.    Define and understand how the 4 modules of DBT (Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness) are used to increase healthy and effective behaviors to enhance areas of functioning.

Lisa Prefontaine is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, working in the Mental Health field for over 18 years. After working for 13 years at a local Behavioral Health Agency, the last 5 years as Clinical Director of Mental Health Services, Lisa is currently in full time private practice. She does individual therapy with adolescents and adults, as well as consultation for private practitioners and EMDR trained therapists, and is a trainer on various clinical topics. Lisa has maintained a private practice for 11 years and began using online services for self-pay in 2011. She continues to do online sessions and consultations.


Completion Requirements

In order to receive a certificate of completion for this course participants must: 

- Attend the full course.  Zoom attendance is used to verify viewing requirements. Zoom can take up to 48 hours to confirm attendance. No partial credit is given for partial attendance.

- Document participation codes or respond to poll questions. Single letter participation codes will be displayed throughout the training. Single letter unique codes will be shown during the presentation. Participants must input the codes in the order they were shown in their UBCE21 portal under the orange "Evaluation & Certificate" button. Participants must record at least 75% of the codes correctly.

-Complete the evaluation.

Equipment Requirements

Required Hardware
- A computer (desktop/laptop) or mobile device (smartphone/tablet).
- Speakers/headphones/earbuds OR access to a phone to call in to the Zoom room.


Strongly Encouraged Hardware
- Webcam or mobile device with a camera for interacting in course activities.


Internet Connection
- A stable Internet connection of 56K or greater is required. (However, please note that a 56K connection may degrade the quality of your experience.)

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Live Trainings (in-person and online) – Half and One Day: Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 10 business days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee.

Participants who cancel a half-day training (less than 5 hours) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Participants who cancel a one-day training (5 hours or more) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Live Training (in-person, online and hybrid) – Multi-Day: There is a $50 non-refundable deposit for all multi-day trainings. Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 30 calendar days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit.

Participants who cancel less than 30 calendar days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued with 5 or less business days’ notice before the start of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Self-Study Training: Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards: Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Substitute Attendance: If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Late Policy: Participants should plan on arriving prior to the start of the training to allow time for sign-in, registration, and training introductions. Participants arriving 20 minutes or more after the scheduled start time or departing 20 minutes or more prior to the scheduled end time will not receive any Continuing Education Credit and/or certificates associated with the training.  

Check Refunds: Check refunds may take up to 4 weeks to process. 

UB Cancelled Trainings: If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full. Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed the training may still be taking place. Please contact the Office of Continuing Education if you have any questions or concerns regarding whether or not a training is still being held.
