This course will provide an overview of evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with youth with complex trauma and common co-morbid conditions. Content will be drawn from evidence based treatments for youth trauma including: Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A) and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT).  In addition, evidence based interventions for common co-morbid conditions including depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior disorders, substance abuse and Borderline Personality Disorder (traits) will be covered. Training will involve didactic instruction, case study and small group discussion.  Content will cover: diagnosis and assessment of complex trauma & PTSD; therapeutic relationship development; psycho-education of PTSD, complex trauma and the “PRACTICE” Model; emotional processing theory of PTSD; stress inoculation therapy; distress reduction & affect regulation training; gradual exposure therapy; creating a “trauma narrative”; cognitive processing and restructuring of trauma distortions; parent, family & community involvement; integrating homework assignments; and personal & community safety enhancement.  Use of evidence based CBT with common co-morbid disorders including depression, anxiety, disruptive behavior disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder (traits) and substance abuse will be incorporated. In addition, innovative “Third Wave” interventions including methods to enhance resilience, positive emotions and personal growth will be reviewed. 

Learning Objectives:  

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify DSM-V diagnostic criteria for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  2. Identify associated symptoms/characteristics of “complex” trauma in youth
  3. Identify the etiological factors of both discrete and “complex” trauma
  4. Identify the fundamental principles and techniques of CBT with PTSD including social work values and ethics
  5. Identify the fundamental principles of TF-CBT including: psycho-education, distress/affect regulation, cognitive processing/restructuring, exposure therapy and the use of the “trauma narrative”, in vivo exposure, and safety planning
  6. Identify the fundamental principles and techniques of ITCT-A including: characteristics of “complex” trauma, Initial Trauma Review for Adolescents, Assessment Treatment Flowchart, Problems to Components Grid, safety intervention, Trigger Grid, titrated exposure, and written trauma homework
  7. Identify the fundamental principles and techniques of CBT with common co-morbid disorders including mood, anxiety, disruptive behavioral disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder (traits) and substance abuse.
  8. Learn advanced “Third Wave” CBT methods to promote resilience, positive emotions and personal growth
  9. Gain an understanding of effective methods to involve family members and caretakers in treatment
  10. Gain an understanding of effective community interventions

David M. Pratt, MSW, PhD Related Seminars and Products


David M. Pratt, Ph.D., MSW, is a New York State Licensed Psychologist with 40+ years’ experience working with children, adolescents and families. Dr. Pratt is in private practice at the Western New York Psychotherapy Services in Amherst, NY and a trainer with PESI, Inc. He is presently on faculty with the University at Buffalo, School of Social Work, Office of Continuing Education and a member of New York State, Office of Mental Health Advisory Board on Evidence-Based Treatments for Youth. He was the Principal Psychologist at the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University at Buffalo and Adjunct Professor/Lecturer, University at Buffalo Counseling, School and Educational Psychology department.

Dr. Pratt has conducted numerous trainings in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at local, state, national and international forums. He is the author of CBT Toolkit for Depressed, Anxious and Suicidal Children and Adolescents (PESI Publishing, Inc., 2019) and Advanced CBT Toolbox for Children and Adolescents: Promoting Resilience, Positive Emotions and Personal Growth (in press, PESI, Publishing, Inc.).

Live (In-Person, Online, and Hybrid) Trainings

The cancellation and refund policy below applies to individual courses. If you purchased multiple courses at one time they may be subject to individual processing fees. Participants can make payment or refund inquiries by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone 716-829-5844 or by email at sw-ce@buffalo.edu. Standard business hours for the Office of Continuing Education are Monday – Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm. Any requests made outside of these days and times will default to the next business day.

Up to 3 CEs/Contact Hours

  • Up to 30 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee 
  • 29 days to 2 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card minus a $15 processing fee OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee 
  • 24 hours or less prior to the training no gift cards or refunds will be issued

Online Self-Study Training

  • Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards

Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards never expire.

Loyalty Reward Points

  • Participants who request a refund will forfeit any Loyalty Reward Points they may have received from that purchase.
  • Participants who request a refund on a purchase paid for with Loyalty Reward Points will have those rewards credited back to their account within 5 business days of the refund being processed.

Substitute Attendance

If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Check Refund

Any refund requests for a check payment may take up to 4 weeks to process.

UB Cancelled Trainings

  • If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full.
  • Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed trainings and workshops may still be taking place.
