Description

Course Format

Live interactive webinar: Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion by unmuting and directly asking questions or through the chat feature in Zoom.

Part 2 is a two-day training that will cover diagnosis specific, Evidence-Based CBT approaches for various “externalizing” child & adolescent disorders including Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Pediatric Bipolar Disorder and Substance Use Disorders.  The emphasis will be on teaching highly practical interventions that clinicians can readily apply in their clinical practice with youth. Given the prevalence of co-morbid trauma/PTSD with these externalizing disorders, the training will be organized through a trauma-informed lens.  Methods to involve parents in the youth’s treatment will be addressed. Attendees will have the opportunity for skill building through didactic instruction and various immersive learning opportunities such as role play and small group application of treatment skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the underlying theoretical foundations and therapeutic principles of CBT and be able to develop a CBT-case conceptualization for youth with externalizing disorders.
  2. Identify effective psychoeducation and motivational counseling methods to engage youth experiencing externalizing disorders in effective treatment.
  3. Apply Evidence-Based interventions to manage youth experiencing Oppositional-Defiant and Conduct Disorder
  4. Identify Evidence-Based interventions for ADHD to promote executive functioning.
  5. Use methods to enhance coping skills for youth with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
  6. Demonstrate therapeutic techniques to manage Pediatric Bipolar Disorder.
  7. Describe Evidence-Based interventions for youth experiencing a Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
  8. Identify clinical methods to involve parents and help them understand and support their child’s involvement in treatment, reinforce skills provided in the child’s treatment, and utilize evidence based positive parenting skills to promote the management of their child’s externalizing disorder.

Research: There is a lot of research available on the subject of cognitive behavioral therapy on Google Scholar.

Target Audience: social workers, mental health therapists, and other clinicians providing mental health services to children, youth, and families
