Description

Course Format

In-person workshop.

Description: Participants will be provided with a brief refresher of First Responder culture before diving into the impact of exposure to critical incidents and operational stressors. The review of trauma related diagnostic criteria, the complexity of moral injury, and elements of administrative betrayal will also be explored. Case conceptualization, a review of evidenced-based interventions, and building resiliency will be integrated to enhance the clinician's confidence in providing quality of care to First Responders and their families. An opportunity to interface with a panel of first responders for a lived experience Q & A will conclude the presentation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe 3 elements of First Responder culture that are congruent with the mental health professional culture.
  2. Identify the full scope of stressors that may arise within the First Responder family.
  3. Recognize diagnostic criterion often associated with occupational and operational stressors and differentiate between moral injury and administrative betrayal.
  4. Apply cultural competency to case conceptualization and the treatment planning process.
  5. Discover empirically supported interventions and explore the scope of additional resources available to first responder families, locally and nationally.
