Course Format

Live interactive webinar: Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion by unmuting and directly asking questions or through the chat feature in Zoom. 


The goal of the workshop is to deepen our understanding of the countertransference phenomenon and to maximize its potential for use in clinical work. The workshop will provide the historical origins of countertransference and transference. It will include information about the various types of countertransference phenomenon and will explore how these different types of countertransference reactions can be used in clinical settings. We will put a focus on addressing the unique aspects of working with families.

Both didactic and experiential teaching methods are used. Interactive participation, role play, and small group breakouts will be encouraged.

 Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the historical origins of countertransference
  2. Describe the differences between transference and countertransference
  3. Recognize the various forms of countertransference including the unique dynamics of family work
  4. Identify countertransference and utilize in clinical work

Research:  

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, health care providers, and other interested individuals.

Laura Rivela, LCSW-R, B.C.D., BCTP-II Related Seminars and Products


Laura Rivela has been in the social work profession for over 20 years with emphasis in behavioral health, technology in behavioral health care, and social work research and education. She has worked as both a direct practice provider and a behavioral health administrator including psychiatric social worker, outpatient clinic director, administrator for state-wide and county behavioral health programs, as well as adjunct faculty for Master of Social Work Students. She is a graduate of Adelphi University with both a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and a Master of Social Work as well as an Associate in Applied Science in Music Business. She holds a post Master’s Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and an Executive Certificate in Business Administration from the University Of Notre Dame, Mendoza College of Business. She was a doctoral student at Fordham University with research interests including collaborative models of health care, behavioral health treatment outcome measures, and microaggressions and women in leadership. She is a member in good standing of several social work and professional organizations including the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work. Ms. Rivela most recently worked as the Behavioral Health Educator for Health Systems Care Coordination at Northwell Health Solutions. She has been invited presenter and trainer and has served as the behavioral health consultant for several agencies throughout New York State. Lastly, Ms. Rivela is a board certified telebehavioral health practitioner and an accomplished musician.

Upon successful registration of the course you will be able to access the course materials. 

How do I test my system / access the online training?

To access the program, please log into your account. Please plan to log in 10 minutes prior to the start time. Click on the Launch Viewer button next to your program title to confirm you can see video and hear audio. You will enter the room with your microphone muted and your camera off. For the best experience, please leave these settings as is unless instructed otherwise. 

How do I access the course materials

To download course materials, log into your account. Under the seminar name click on the Handouts button.

For some trainings, the course handouts may not be available until the morning of the program.

Completion Requirements

No partial credit is given for partial attendance.

Live Online Completion Requirements 

In order to receive a certificate of completion for this course participants must complete the following.

Please note all requirements can be found in your UBCE21 portal. 

- Attend the entire course.  Zoom attendance is used to verify viewing requirements. Zoom can take up to 48 hours to confirm attendance. Participation in small group activities is required.

- Document participation codes and respond to poll questions. Single letter participation codes will be displayed throughout the training. Participants must input the codes in the orange "Evaluation & Certificate" button. Participants must record at least 75% of the codes correctly and participate in at least 75% of the polls.

-  After the training, complete the evaluation by clicking on the "Evaluation and Certificate" button for this course.

The certificate of completion will be immediately generated in your account upon completion of all course requirements. Certificates may be downloaded, printed, or left in your account.

Live (In-Person, Online, and Hybrid) Trainings

The cancellation and refund policy below applies to individual courses. If you purchased multiple courses at one time they may be subject to individual processing fees. Participants can make payment or refund inquiries by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone 716-829-5844 or by email at sw-ce@buffalo.edu. Standard business hours for the Office of Continuing Education are Monday – Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm. Any requests made outside of these days and times will default to the next business day.

Up to 3 CEs/Contact Hours

  • Up to 30 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee 
  • 29 days to 2 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card minus a $15 processing fee OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee 
  • 24 hours or less prior to the training no gift cards or refunds will be issued

3.25 - 5.75 CEs/Contact Hours

  • Up to 30 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee 
  • 29 days to 2 days prior to the training date refunds will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card minus a $25 processing fee OR (2) a refund of 50% to original method of payment

12 or more CEs/Contact Hours

  • Up to 60 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $50 processing fee 
  • 59 to 6 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card minus a $50 processing fee OR (2) a refund of 50% to original method of payment
  • 5 days or less prior to the training      No gift cards or refunds will be issued
  • Visit ubswce.ce21.com and refer to the "CEs/Contact Hours" tab on the respective training page to confirm the number of approved CEs/Contact Hours. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules that will be stated in the workshop description.

Online Self-Study Training

  • Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards

Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards never expire.

Loyalty Reward Points

  • Participants who request a refund will forfeit any Loyalty Reward Points they may have received from that purchase.
  • Participants who request a refund on a purchase paid for with Loyalty Reward Points will have those rewards credited back to their account within 5 business days of the refund being processed.

Substitute Attendance

If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Check Refund

Any refund requests for a check payment may take up to 4 weeks to process.

UB Cancelled Trainings

  • If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full.
  • Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed trainings and workshops may still be taking place.
