Description: This training is for all types of supervisors (clinical and non-clinical) who want to be trauma-informed in their interactions with staff. Trainers will provide an overview of the trauma-informed framework for supervision, including how trauma impacts the brain and behavior in the workplace, re-traumatization, the impact of the current pandemics (i.e., COVID-19, racial/civil unrest, inequity, etc.), and how the trauma-informed values of safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment can be used by supervisors to “neutralize the workplace environment,” promote diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA), and support wellness and productivity of the workforce. Further, the possible “impacts of the work” (e.g., secondary trauma, vicarious trauma, burnout, moral distress, decision fatigue) will be explored, as well as how to support oneself and the workforce to promote resilience and growth.
Trauma-informed approaches and workplace culture provide opportunity for supervisors to recognize the impact of stress, adversity, and trauma on the workforce, while responding in ways that reduce unintentional harm caused by re-traumatization. Using various activities, discussions and videos, participants will be invited to reflect on and consider their own supervisory work, as well as explore what tools and resources they can bring back to their agencies to support their staff in trauma-informed ways that promote DEIA. The activities in the training will assist them in identifying what is working already, hear examples from the trainers and other participating supervisors and build on their strengths to create next small steps to better ensure trauma-informed responses to the workforce.
Learning Objectives:
Research: Numerous research articles on trauma-informed supervision can be found on google scholar.
Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.
