This live online course fulfills the Trauma and Addiction foundation course requirement for the UB Trauma-Informed Certificate Programs. You may choose this course OR the self-study course Trauma-Fueled Addiction: Stop the Suffering - End the Pain.
Whether you work in addictions or mental health, it is essential that practitioners understand how to create integrated approaches for addiction treatment and trauma treatment. Co-morbidity research has consistently shown high concordance rates between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorders in community and clinical samples. Up to 95% of those seeking/attending Substance Use Disorder treatment have trauma exposure. Childhood physical, psychological, and sexual abuse are often a pathway to Substance Use Disorders. Research shows that substances are used to reduce the painful emotions associated with trauma. Treating one problem without treating the other can result in a vicious cycle of continued substance abuse, continued high risk behaviors, and difficulty alleviating PTSD symptoms.
In order to integrate workshop content and address the varied training needs of participants, content will focus on an overview of addictions, overview of trauma and then move into a focus on their relationship and treatment approaches and tools for and integration in treatment. The instructor presents from the philosophy of the national Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) “No Wrong Door” with a conviction that each practitioner needs to understand addictions and trauma, and how to create integrated service planning and treatment.
Learning Objectives:
Research: SAMSHA produces and provides a number of publications on substance use and mental health. Google Scholar provides links to a number of research studies on trauma and addiction.
Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.

Charles Syms, LCSW/ACSW, is a clinical associate professor who has been a faculty member in the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work since 1998. Presently, his assignments include classroom instruction, primarily to students interested in the alcohol and other drug specialization.
Professor Syms has over 35 years of professional social work practice. His experience includes work in child welfare, domestic violence, forensic mental health and substance use disorders. He has held numerous positions, including child protection worker, child protection clinical consultant, prison psychiatric social worker, supervisor on an in-patient chemical dependency unit, domestic violence specialist and group leader, child welfare program director, and a leadership role in coordinating two community-based, university/public school collaboration violence prevention projects.
Additionally, Professor Syms shares his experience and expertise as a member of agency-based and professional advisory boards at the local, state and national levels.
A past National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) Minority Research Fellow, Professor Syms’ current teaching and research interests include the treatment of individuals with substance use disorders, particularly the impact of alcohol and other drugs on people with mental health problems and those involved with child welfare system, as well as extending education into the on-line environment.
In order to receive a certificate of completion for this course participants must:
- Attend the full course. Zoom attendance is used to verify viewing requirements. Zoom can take up to 48 hours to confirm attendance. No partial credit is given for partial attendance.
- Document participation codes or respond to poll questions. Single letter participation codes will be displayed throughout the training. Single letter unique codes will be shown during the presentation. Participants must input the codes in the order they were shown in their UBCE21 portal under the orange "Evaluation & Certificate" button. Participants must record at least 75% of the codes correctly.
-Complete the evaluation.
Required Hardware
- A computer (desktop/laptop) or mobile device (smartphone/tablet).
- Speakers/headphones/earbuds OR access to a phone to call in to the Zoom room.
Strongly Encouraged Hardware
- Webcam or mobile device with a camera for interacting in course activities.
Internet Connection
- A stable Internet connection of 56K or greater is required. (However, please note that a 56K connection may degrade the quality of your experience.)

Live Trainings (in-person and online) – Half and One Day: Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 10 business days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee.
Participants who cancel a half-day training (less than 5 hours) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.
Participants who cancel a one-day training (5 hours or more) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.
Live Training (in-person, online and hybrid) – Multi-Day: There is a $50 non-refundable deposit for all multi-day trainings. Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 30 calendar days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit.
Participants who cancel less than 30 calendar days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued with 5 or less business days’ notice before the start of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.
Self-Study Training: Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.
Gift Cards: Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.
Substitute Attendance: If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Late Policy: Participants should plan on arriving prior to the start of the training to allow time for sign-in, registration, and training introductions. Participants arriving 20 minutes or more after the scheduled start time or departing 20 minutes or more prior to the scheduled end time will not receive any Continuing Education Credit and/or certificates associated with the training.
Check Refunds: Check refunds may take up to 4 weeks to process.
UB Cancelled Trainings: If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full. Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed the training may still be taking place. Please contact the Office of Continuing Education if you have any questions or concerns regarding whether or not a training is still being held.
