Course Format

Live in-person. This seated training is limited to 30 participants. *There is also an interactive live online option being offered at the same time. 


PREREQUISITE: Participants should have experience in assessing Early Maladaptive Schemas, have an understanding of the basic principles of Schema Focused Therapy, and bring one de-identified case to explore and practice skills.

This interactive workshop will focus on the use of Schema Mode identification and process to address complex trauma survival responses and addictions. The instructor will utilize casework to illustrate the principles of mode presentation and function and provide effective strategies to facilitate breaking maladaptive, comfortable and familiar behavior patterns. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain in-depth understanding of the Child, Parent, and Coping Modes including:  presentation, function, triggers, symptom and substance use maintenance.
  • Facilitate Partial Re-parenting, imaging and experiential strategies to address un-met Core Childhood Needs and motivation for change.
  • Increase awareness of schema triggers in the therapeutic relationship and interplay of client and therapist schemas and modes.
  • Learn effective strategies to help individuals move consistently to a Healthy Adult Mode and adaptive functioning.

Research: Schema Focused Therapy was developed by Jeffrey E. Young, PhD.  It has been extensively researched to effectively treat a wide variety of typically treatment resistant conditions, including Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Jay Swarthout, LMHC, is the Director of Program Development and Evaluation at Cazenovia Recovery Systems in Buffalo, NY and adjunct faculty at the University of Buffalo School of Social Work.  Jay has forty years of experience as a clinician, administrator, educator, trainer, and program and system developer in working with individuals with trauma, criminal justice, developmental disability, and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder issues. Jay has been recognized by Erie/Niagara NAMI, the Mental Health Association of Erie County, and the Western New York Chemical Dependency Consortium for his community contributions and service.

Refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee

Online Self-Study Training

Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards

Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Loyalty Reward Points

Participants who request a refund will forfeit any Loyalty Reward Points they may have received from that purchase. Participants who request a refund on a purchase paid for with Loyalty Reward Points will have those rewards credited back to their account within 5 business days of the refund being processed.

Substitute Attendance

If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Check Refund

Any refund requests for a check payment may take up to 4 weeks to process. 

UB Cancelled Trainings

If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full.

Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed trainings and workshops may still be taking place.
