Description

During this training, participants will explore the United States system of kinship care. By conducting a critical examination of the past and undertaking an analysis of future trends, this session encourages participants to envision a system of care that supports children and families in a value-driven and culturally responsive manner. Participants will be inspired to creatively foreshadow ways in which they can influence and create a more socially just child welfare system by anticipating some of the conditions that will shape the future of kinship care.

Objective #1:  Describe kinship care cultural traditions and articulate the protective factors inherent to the practice;

Objective #2:  Articulate at least two opportunities and two challenges that will potentially arise because of the Family First Prevention Services Act as it relates to kinship care;

Objective #3:  Summarize a Futuring Approach for promoting kinship care that child welfare advocates can implement in their local communities; and

Objective #4:  Use conversation starters to explore socially just and culturally responsive kinship models of care.
