Description
Recorded webinar.
Co-occurring disorders are increasingly prevalent in the individuals we serve. The treatment landscape is additionally complicated by the interplay of high risk substance use and symptoms of suicidality. This training is for clinicians interested in learning more about risk factors for suicide, accidental overdose, and the co-occurrence of both. Additionally, the training will cover interventions to manage suicidal ideation, collaboratively develop effective safety plans, and implement harm reduction techniques with individuals using substances. Strategies and approaches discussed will take a trauma-informed lens recognizing the importance of safety, choice, and empowerment in this clinical work. Participants will also learn strategies to cope with their own experience of losing a patient to suicide or accidental overdose.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize risk factors for suicide and accidental overdose.
- Create effective and collaborative safety plans to address lethality and overdose risk.
- Employ harm reductions strategies with individuals using substances, empowering PWUD (people who use drugs) to make informed decisions for safer use.
- Identify ways to cope with patient loss related to suicide or accidental overdose.
Research: See the following websites for more information about each of the specific areas of the training:
- Co-Occuring Disorders - SAMHSA
- Suicide/Lethality - DBT (Linehan); CAMS (Jobes); Zero Suicide including CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means); Now Matters Now
- Harm Reduction - Intergrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy (Tatarsky); National Harm Reduction Coalition; Zero Overdose
Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.
