Hybrid: Recorded video online activity and reading-based online activity.


This course is an elective course in the Online Trauma-Informed Organization Certificate Program: Basics for All Staff that was created by the University at Buffalo School of Social Work’s Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC).

This elective module offers an overview of the current state of the healthcare system and a foundation of information to support the workforce in implementing Trauma-Informed change in related settings. The module contains practical considerations for integrating trauma-informed knowledge and skills into all interactions and aspects of service delivery, as well as institutionalizing the values/principles of a trauma-informed approach in organizational culture. 

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this learning module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the connections between trauma, mental health, and physical health;
  • Discuss the unintentional harm caused by re-traumatization within the healthcare system;
  • Explain the nature of stress, adversity, and trauma among individuals, groups, systems, oneself, and the workforce; 
  • Identify specific strategies, approaches, and practices that can be utilized to advance trauma-informed approaches in the organization and broader healthcare system; 
  • Recognize the impacts of the work and implement strategies to stay regulated/care for oneself.

Target Audience:  This course is appropriate for medical professionals, social workers, and all levels of human service staff that seek information on trauma and a Trauma-Informed approach in the healthcare system and related settings.

Dr. Viju Jacob currently serves as the VP of Medical Affairs/Medical Director at a large FQHC, Urban Health Plan, in Bronx, NY. His day to day responsibilities include providing oversight for 12 School Based Health Practices, 2 Family Practice sites and shares responsibilities in managing 6 School Based Dental Practices among other institutional responsibilities in the realms of regulatory affairs, policy and external affairs.

Interestingly, as a new immigrant to the Bronx, Dr. Jacob was also a user of a School Based Health Center; he received some of his earliest dental care from the School Based Dental Clinic located in PS 8 in the North Bronx. He completed his Bachelor’s from the Sophie Davis School for Biomedical Education at The City University of New York, where he had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Jack Geiger, one of the founders of the Community Health Center movement. He received his MD from State University of New York-Health Science Center Brooklyn. He completed his Pediatric Residency and Chief Residency from the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at The Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. He currently lives with his wife and 20 year-old twins in Westchester, NY.

  3. Trauma-informed responses in healthcare settings;
  4. Domains and considerations for implementing trauma-informed change in healthcare settings;
  5. The intersection of health equity and trauma-informed care;
  6. The impacts of the work; and
  7. Complete the readings located in the Handouts section of this course.

Completion Requirements

No partial credit is given for partial attendance.

In order to receive a certificate of completion for this course participants must complete the following.

- After the training, take and pass the quiz with a score of 80% or higher. Participants have three chances to pass the quiz. You can access the quiz by clicking on the "Evaluation and Certificate" button for this course.
