Description
Live interactive webinar: Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion by unmuting and directly asking questions or through the chat feature in Zoom.
Many neurodivergent clients - particularly those with autism, ADHD, CPTSD, and sensory processing differences - encounter barriers in traditional trauma therapy that can limit its effectiveness or even re-traumatize. As clinicians, we often need to adapt both our approach and our expectations to meet the diverse ways neurodivergent minds process trauma, regulation, and relationship. This presentation offers a practical, experience-based look at how trauma treatment (EMDR, PC, TFCBT) can be adapted to better serve neurodivergent clients. Drawing from current research and clinical experience with both adolescents and adults, I’ll share case examples, visual tools, and adaptations I’ve found essential—such as co-regulated resourcing, the use of special interests in resource development and scaling, and incorporating sensory preferences into resourcing and skill building. We’ll also explore how differences in emotional expression, interoception, and language processing impact things preparation and processing. Participants will leave with strategies they can use right away, including worksheets, scripts, and adaptations that support autonomy and reduce overwhelm. Whether you're new to working with neurodivergent clients or looking to refine your practice, this session aims to bridge the gap between protocol and person.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify 2 areas in preparation phases which require special consideration for neurodivergent populations
- Describe co-regulated resourcing
- Identify 3 visual tools for use in trauma processing
