This is an overview course providing a core understanding of current evidence-based approaches used in treatment for individuals with a trauma diagnosis. These methods are identified by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies as having strong research support: Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). The use of psychopharmacology in trauma treatment will also be covered as many individuals require both treatment approaches and medication. In addition, content will address the importance for clinicians to attend to their own self-care needs when working with trauma survivors in order to avoid burn-out and vicarious traumatization.
