Description

Course Format

Live interactive webinar: Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion by unmuting and directly asking questions or through the chat feature in Zoom.

This training provides education and specific strategies for anyone interested in learning more about sex therapy including sex therapists, trainees, and the “sex-therapy curious.” You will learn to integrate treatment and discussion of sexual concerns into your practice. This training is relevant for those currently providing these services and those new to sex therapy; this is especially useful for clinicians focused on couple treatment but with limited sexuality training and seasoned professionals still seeking new approaches.

After a brief introduction to a few ethical principles and some “myth” busting, we will examine hypothetical cases derived from the instructor’s experience. We will take a conversational approach to understand what is going on with these clients.

Participants will integrate interview skills including the PLISSIT model and inquiry based on ethical principles in sexology rather than dominant culture norms. Participants will engage in sexual health conversations and develop skills to have those with clients. Sex addiction, pornography use, and infidelity will be evaluated vis a vis a different cultural and ethical framework. Participants will have the opportunity to present shortened anonymized case presentations for group discussion and assessment of first and second steps to address sex and relationship material. Numerous resources and opportunity for further training will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify how the field of sexology challenges “traditional” or “conventional” thinking on sex and relationships.
  2. Describe the principles of sexual health that provide a clinical and evidenced based approach to addressing sexual health as contrasted with legal, moral, and religious beliefs and codification.
  3. Analyze cases on alternative or non-traditional sexual interests and behaviors (kink, “cross dressing”, open relationships) to expand the therapeutic approach with clients who present with these issues/concerns/desires.
  4. Integrate client’s needs into a treatment plan based on this new information presented.
