Description

This course will teach clinicians interventions for every step of the way in treatment from the first session to the last. For example, they will learn current information and research on trauma and neurobiology so they have a base for their practice and information to share with clients, they will learn how to conduct a trauma-sensitive session take a trauma-informed list of client experiences, presentation of case formulation and treatment planning during the first phase- Client History and Treatment Planning,

Participants will move on to learn several relaxation and resource tools for the phase 2 Preparation phase such as breath work, imagining a calm safe place to relax the body and mind, and mindfulness tools that help clients maintain here-and-now awareness and grounding. Participants.

We will then learn the EMDR protocol phases 3 Assessment (asking questions about a memory to start focusing on it), 4 Desensitization and Reprocessing (working on a memory until the disturbance around it is a 0, 5 Installation (strengthening a positive self-belief about the memory), 6 Body Scan (check all through the body for any remaining tension or disturbance), 7 Closure (create a container in your mind to put any unfinished work into and do other relaxing activities) and 8 Re-evaluation (what to do to follow-up in the next session after EMDR).

Participants will learn EMDRs mechanisms of effect (hypothesis for how it works) for their own foundation and to explain to their clients. For example, EMDR mimics Rapid Eye Movement-REM sleep, utilizes  working memory (area of the brain that holds what’s on your mind right now) to help address and digest information). They will learn the EMDR modality (steps in the procedure) and model (Adaptive Information Processing (AIP)which explains how the brain digests and utilizes experiences.

They will learn EMDR specific tasks such as how to help a client get unstuck in their work (cognitive interweaves), how to do a floatback (checking for and working on other past experiences that are effecting the current experience being worked on), how to work with a cluster of experiences (things that happen multiple times such as verbal abuse throughout childhood) and how to do a future template to prepare clients for future situations (dating, family gatherings, job interviews, etc.). They will learn EMDR protocol variations for special populations such as children, addictions, and dissociation.

They will also receive case consultation on their cases via their client videos, filling out and presenting case consultation forms and general discussion. The course will offer all this and more via lecture, practicum, group discussion, client videos, handouts and practice with their clients. Participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible to go on to become certified in EMDR (go to emdria.org for certification requirements).

EMDR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discuss how the brain takes in, processes, and digests experiences
  2. Explain to client’s what trauma is (how it happens, symptoms, etc.)
  3. Locate links to current research on trauma
  4. Interpret the meaning of trauma in behaviors
  5. Utilize assessment questionnaires such as Post Traumatic Checklist-5 (PCL-5) and Impact of Events Scale (IES), to measure signs and symptoms of trauma.                    
  6. Formulate and present a trauma informed case formulation to a client
  7. Discuss the history of EMDR (inception to present)
  8. Name at least one intervention for every phase of treatment
  9. Collect a journey list of client’s good and not-so-good experiences (phase 1- client history and treatment planning).                                                                  
  10. Prepare a client for EMDR (safe place, container and other relaxation and resource tools). Phase 2 (preparation)-
  11. Select a trauma-informed target order for clients (top 10 worst, order by theme, chronological, etc.).
  12. Demonstrate how to do the EMDR standard protocol Phases 3 (assessment) - 7 (closure)
  13. Choose when and how to close a session (container, breath work, etc.).
  14. Prepare a client for what to expect between sessions.
  15. Conduct a check-in (phase 8, re-evaluation) at the next session. 
  16. Evaluate next steps based on re-evaluation outcomes.
  17. Integrate the interventions including EMDR into an existing practice.  
  18. Indicate what is meant by EMDR’s mechanisms of effect (hypothesis for how it works).
  19. State how EMDR replicates Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM sleep).
  20. Specify how EMDR promotes mindfulness (staying in the moment).
  21. Explain the working memory theory for how EMDR works (ask questions about the event to put info on working memory part of the brain then, use eye movements or other distractors that compete for working memory space. Keep going until the past memory information gets kicked off the working memory space in the brain).  
  22. Distinguish differences between EMDR and other therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, exposure,

              psychoanalysis, etc.                             

  1. Define EMDR’s model (Adaptive Information Processing- AIP) for how the brain digests experiences and how EMDR interacts with aspects that can get stuck (maladaptively stored) to help them get unstuck and process.  
  2. Explain the EMDR procedure to a client.                                                          
  3. Conduct the EMDR standard protocol with clients.                                                                                
  4. Name at least three cognitive interweaves (ways therapists can intervene if a client is stuck).
  5. Evaluate when to use cognitive interweaves.
  6. Practice floatback (how to take a current memory and explore past events that night be contributing to how the current events are experienced).
  7. Evaluate when to use floatback (help clients see how the past connects to the present, to jump start stuck processing, etc.).
  8. Detect when there is/are clusters (same events happening over and over again).                                                        
  9. Organize the use of EMDR on cluster memories.
  10. Practice future template (imaginal rehearsal of possible future challenging situations to prepare for them) .               
  11. Apply at least three modifications when using EMDR with children/teens.
  12. Review the spectrum of dissociation.
  13. Apply at least three grounding tools for dissociation.
  14. Express a beginning conceptualization of using EMDR with special populations such as military.
  15. Diagnose the use of EMDR with special challenges such as physical illness and phobias.
  16. Estimate when and how to implement the recent events protocol (events that happened within three months).
  17. List the requirements for EMDRIA certification upon completing this course.**

Kriss has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1987. She is a consultant and trainer for Progressive Counting and EMDR and an advanced training provider. Kriss currently serves on the EMDR International Association Board of Directors and was a member of the EMDRIA Standards and Training Committee for four years. She served as a co-regional coordinator for the WNY EMDR Regional Network for 10 years, worked for 7 years as a field instructor for the UB School of Social Work and has over ten years’ experience as a clinician and supervisor in the field of chemical dependency. Kriss currently has a private practice serving teens through adults and treats challenges such as PTSD, self-injurious behaviors, depression, anxiety, phobias, and adjustment issues. She has published articles in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, Traumatology and Counseling and Psychotherapy Research.        ** EMDRIA is the governing body that credentials EMDR Basic Trainings, and advanced credit programs. They review and approve clinicians to be certified in EMDR and Approved Consultants in EMDR. Membership includes journal and magazine subscriptions related to EMDR research, innovations in EMDR and case studies. Members can also join special interest groups such as working with children, military and addictions. We will go over what’s needed to get certified. For more information go to emdria.org.

This training is reviewed and approved by the EMDR International Association. Approval is renewed every three years. The required text and content of this training come from Francine Shapiro, PhD, founder of EMDR.

Special Registration Instructions

Please note the following expectations of the course. 

  1. You will be working on your own personal material with some of the interventions including EMDR. This allows participants to experience EMDR firsthand and allows for a more realistic experience for the therapist. Confidentiality is a must.
  2. You will need to have an active caseload in order to practice the interventions including EMDR.
  3. You will be doing a client video*, presenting cases for case consultation, practicing the interventions including EMDR, and participating in lecture and discussion. Though sharing your experiences helps all of us learn I want you to feel you can set a boundary with group discussions so, we hope you will participate but also take care of yourself and know the amount of group discussion is optional. 
    1.   *Client videos- We will give participants a release form for clients to sign. Recordings will not be sent over the internet. Participants will record videos to their computer (not the cloud). Participants have the option to blur the face or use “cartoon Mode” for further confidentiality. They will be shown via participants sharing screen using the trainer’s HIPAA compliant Zoom account. This trainer also has several fire walls / layers of encryption. The video will be deleted immediately after we view it.

EMDR Therapy Course Schedule / Timeline

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 1 from 9:00-5:00

  1. Traumatology 101- Visual demo with a brain and interactive discussion (90 minutes all didactic and discussion) 9-10:30
  2. Introductions, online housekeeping, course schedule and expectations
  3. We will define trauma by looking at how we normally digest experiences, potentially traumatic experiences and how
  4. digestion gets stuck, symptoms and behaviors that result, why parts/all of experiences get stuck, some trauma statistics
  5. and a brief intro to the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP) as I will get into it in detail on day two. I will mention
  6. Epigenetics and the ACE Study and have them take the ACE questionnaire. If time permits, I’ll also discuss cultural
  7. considerations regarding trauma and trauma treatment. At the end of this section, I will have them experience floatback (
  8. exercise to see what past events are contributing to the upset of present ones) as it’s a great lead into the wheel turns
  9. and case formulation exercises we will do in the afternoon.  
  10. Break (15 minutes) 10:30-10:45
  11. Phase 1: Client History and Treatment Planning. What does a trauma informed session look like from evaluation and
  12. beyond? Discussion, demo and practicum (120 minutes- 45 didactic and 75 practicum) 10:45-12:45
  13. We will discuss elements of a trauma informed/sensitive therapy session during history taking and for the rest of
  14. treatment, what happens during phase 1 (client history and treatment planning) and discuss how to gather targets
  15. (history of events). Participants will practice this with the journey questionnaires handout (asks questions on client
  16. Experiences both good and not-so-good). A video of the first session with a client will be shown if time permits. 
  17. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:45-1:15
  18. Learn a resource called Positive Parts on the Team (video demo and practicum) – (90 minutes- 30 didactic
  19. and 60 practicum) 1:15-3:15
  20. We will learn and practice this resource. Participants receive a handout with several relaxation and resource tools that I
  21. do with them throughout the training and they are encouraged to utilize them right from the start of therapy. 
  22. Break (15 minutes) 3:15-3:30
  23. Presenting the outcome of the evaluation- Case Formulation and treatment planning (discussion, demo and practicum) 
  24. (120 minutes- 30 didactic/discussion and 60 practicum) 3:30-5:00
  25. We will use a case vignette to formulate a case formulation. Then, discuss how to present the case formulation to a client
  26. (this will be a group practicum). This will also include how to explain situation processing when it goes well, when it gets
  27. stuck, symptoms that result, an intro to EMDR, what other clients like about EMDR and sharing positives the client has to
  28. do the work. We will also look at a treatment plan for kids and adults. A client video of case formulation will be shown.    
  29. Total for the day = 3.75 hours didactic and 3.25 hours practicum = 7 hours 

 

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 2 from 9:00-5:00

  1. History of EMDR, research from 1987 to present, AIP model, mechanism of effect, EMDR and other therapies
  2. with visuals and discussion and practicum- Explaining EMDRs mechanism of effect to clients’ (90 minutes- 90 didactic)
  3. 9:00-10:30
  4. We will present the legend of Francine (EMDR creator), change from Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) to Eye
  5. movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), research from initial 1989 study to present and
  6. research on EMDR’s success with treatment resistant populations such as clients with Schizophrenia and Autism. We will
  7. further discuss the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model in terms of how parts of the brain function, the use of
  8. chemicals and nervous system functioning during times of feeling safe and times when there’s a real or perceived threat.
  9. We will discuss how EMDR utilizes Memory Reconsolidation for healing (access maladaptively stored information, use a
  10. distracter to keep the person in the here and now while new and contradictory information is introduced, and the
  11. memory is reconsolidated into an adaptive experience). We will also discuss mechanisms of effect / hypothesis for how
  12. EMDR works (mimics Rapid Eye Movement- REM phase of sleep, using and taxing working memory (platform in the brain
  13. that holds what we are thinking and feeling in the moment0, mindfulness (awareness- keeping the person in the
  14. moment), etc. We will also discuss the relationship between and integration with other therapy orientations. We will
  15. introduce the questions asked to access information on a memory in phase 3 (assessment) just to point out how EMDR
  16. accesses several elements of a memory as opposed to other therapy orientations which access only one element.
  17. Break (15 minutes) 10:30-11:00
  18. Phase 2- Preparations- (120 minutes- 30 for didactic and 90 for practice) 11:00-1:00
  19. We will introduce the 8 phases and review phase 1 (client history and treatment planning). Then, explain phase 2
  20. (preparation)and learn and practice safe place, Resource Development and Installation- RDI (access internal resources to
  21. manage situations effectively) and container. If there’s time, we will practice the eraser and/or TV tools. Client video will
  22. be shown if time permits.
  23. Lunch (30 minutes) 1:00-1:30
  24. Preparation cautions and dissociation (90 minutes- 75 didactic and 15 practicum) 1:30-3:15
  25. We’ll discuss preparation cautions such as medical issues, legal issues (testimony before and after EMDR), secondary
  26. gains (reasons a client might not want to or doesn’t think they can get better), migraines (turn office lights off, avoid
  27. using electronics to facilitate eye movements or the dual attention, etc.), substance abuse (not doing EMDR if client is
  28. intoxicated), current events or stressors in a client’s life (Presentations, exams, weddings, etc.). Then, we will have
  29. participants take the Dissociative Experiences Scale- DES (questionnaire to measure if there’s dissociation and to what
  30. degree) and begin to discuss dissociation: what it is, different dissociation measurements and spectrum of dissociation
  31. from primary (mild and typical for all of us) to tertiary (complex trauma and Dissociative Identity Disorder- DID). We will
  32. look at and practice ways to help clients identify level/degree of presence in the room as well as some grounding tools to
  33. help clients become more present/mindful. 
  34. Break (15 minutes) 3:15-3:30
  35. Dissociation and a case consultation (90 minutes- 30 minutes didactic and 60 minutes practicum) 3:30-5:00
  36. We will continue to discuss dissociation by learning Creating a Sacred Space (Frasers Table- parts work) via Didactic, client
  37. Video and practicum. We will end with participants doing case consultation on one of their hardest clients (or two if time
  38. permits).
  39. Total for today = 3.75 hours didactic and 3.25 hours practicum = 7 hours

 

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 3 from 9:00-5:00

  1. Case consultation and practice explaining the EMDR procedure to clients (120 minutes- 60 minutes is case
  2. consultation, 30 minutes didactic and 30 minutes is practicum) 9:00-11:00
  3. We will review Phases 1 (client history and treatment planning) & 2 (preparation) by playing Jeopardy. We will introduce
  4. a couple more assessment questionnaires such as Impact of Events Scale (IES) and Post Traumatic Check List (PCL-5),
  5. which asses’ symptoms and behaviors related to upsetting experiences. We will do a check-in (case consultation on work
  6. with clients so far). We will discuss and practice explaining the EMDR procedure to clients as well as what they can
  7. expect. We will show a client video.
  8. Break (15 minutes) 11:00-11:15
  9. A couple more preparation tools, target selection and order, Phase 3 and go over EMDR Session Worksheet (90
  10. minutes- 60 for didactic and 30 practicum) 11:15-12:45
  11. We will learn the stop signal, so clients have a way to stop the work if needed. We will go over options for gathering
  12. targets (evets / experiences of the client) and selecting target order (top 10 worst, chronological order, etc.).
  13. We will go over and do a round robin to practice phase 3 assessment (side 1 of EMDR Session Worksheet),
  14. We’ll review and discuss the Negative and Positive Cognition list (NC /PC list) and then, go over page 2 of the EMDR
  15. Session Worksheet.
  16. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:45-1:15
  17. Client video and first EMDR practice (120 minutes- 30 minutes video didactic and 90 practicum) 1:15-3:15
  18. After watching a client video, the participants will have their first practice with EMDR. They will choose a current and not
  19. disturbing or mildly upsetting experience not on their list or connected to family just to practice the procedure. They will
  20. be in groups of 3 (therapist, client, and coach) and will rotate as each person finishes. We will have a debrief after.
  21. Break (15 minutes) 3:15-3:30
  22. Discuss phase 7 closure, talking to the client about what to expect between sessions. We’ll learn eye movement
  23. alternatives and devices available to the EMDR clinician.
  24. (90 minutes- 90 minutes didactic) 3:30-5:00
  25. We will go over phase 7 (closure) on EMDR Session Form. We will discuss ways to close a complete and incomplete
  26. session (Container, go over the debriefing sheet and present options such as keeping a log for in between session
  27. reporting) and show client closure video. We will then Discuss alternative directions of Eye Movements (EM’s) such as
  28. vertical, diagonal, circle, infinity sign, etc. We will also discuss gadgets used for the distraction used to help the client stay
  29. present- dual attention stimulus (DAS)- such as a light bar, tappers (alternating vibrations in each hand), online dual
  30. attention options. We will demo the gadget via visuals, and look at some online apps. We will also discuss client reactions
  31. and what might come up during processing. 
  32. Total time for today is 3.5 hours didactic, 1 hour consultation and 2.5 hours of practicum = 7 hours

 

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 4 from 9:00-5:00

  1. Review EMDR Session Form page 2 and blocked/stuck processing. Practice #2 (90 minutes- 30 minutes didactic and 60
  2. minutes practicum) 9:00-10:30
  3. We will go over page 2 of the EMDR Session Form to review phases 4-7. We will start the discussion about blocked/stuck
  4. processing by introducing a few ideas for dealing with wayward sessions. We will then have practice #2. A full discussion
  5. of cognitive interweaves (ways therapists can step in to help if a client gets stuck) will happen on day 6. 
  6. Break (15 minutes) 10:30-10:45
  7. Practice #3 (90 minutes- all practicum) 10:45-12:15
  8. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:15-12:45
  9. Clusters and practice #4 (120 minutes- 30 didactic and 90 practicum) 12:45-2:45
  10. Handouts explaining the procedure for clusters (dealing with multiple similar events) and a visual diagram will be given
  11. and reviewed We will show a client video of the movie of the whole thing part of the cluster protocol. Then, we will have
  12. practice #4

  14. EMDR with special populations and special situations (120 minutes all didactic) 3:00-5:00
  15. Will discuss and explain any protocol variations for special situations such as anxiety / phobia, illness / somatic issues,
  16. grief and self-use of EMDR. We will also discuss military, couples, sexual abuse victims, perpetrators, and complex post-
  17. traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  18. We will also explore cultural considerations for folks in the Queer, disabled, BIPOC (black, indigenous people of color)
  19. communities, etc. We already addressed dissociation in day 2 but will elaborate further with EMDR when we discuss
  20. cognitive interweaves on day 6.
  21. Total time for today is 3 hours didactic and 4 hours practicum = 7 hours 

 

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 5 from 9:00-5:00

  1.  Phase 8- Re-evaluation, 3 pronged approach and floatback (90 minutes- 30 practicum and 60
  2. minutes didactic) 9:00-10:30 
  3.  We will get into pairs and practice the phase 8- Re-evaluation questions (how to follow up at the next session), discuss

  1. Wayward sessions, cognitive interweaves and practice #7 using CI. (120 minutes- 45 didactic and 75 practicum) 9:00-

  3. We will discuss many ways clients get stuck in processing (negative beliefs causing blocking, past memories effecting
  4. present experiences, lack of information, etc.) and options the therapist has for helping them get unstuck called cognitive
  5. interweaves. Will show a client video of interweaves. Then, we will have practice # 7 and they will be asked to try on 2-3
  6. interweaves even if the client doesn’t need it just to practice.
  7. Break (15 minutes) 11:00-11:15
  8. Practicum #8 (90 minutes) 11:15-12:45
  9. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:45-1:15
  10. EMDR with kids (120 minutes all didactic) 1:15-3:15
  11. We will go through each of the 8 phases and discuss how to explain them to kids, collecting targets via the Tree of Me
  12. Exercise, how to present a case formulation to kids and demonstrate a variety of ways to accomplish the 8 phases with
  13. kids. We will demo materials such as puppets, jump ropes, wands, clay, the tree of me, crafts, books, kids negative and
  14. positive belief sheet. Will show a video of Tree of Me with a kid and a video of EMDR with a kid.
  15. Break (15 minutes) 3:15-3:30
  16. Discuss EMDRIA and steps to get certified. Case consultation (90 minutes- 30 didactic and 60 consultation) 3:30-5:00
  17. We will talk about the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA)**, the benefits of membership and the certification
  18. process they have and remind participants to open and download all the EMDRIA required handouts located in
  19. “Assignments” in Canvas LMS. We will do case consultation by asking participants to think of a difficult case, they fill out
  20. the As the Wheel Turns Case Consultation form and present the case formulation and we will do group consultation on
  21. these cases and any others brought up. Review how to video tape a client. If there’s time, we will show another client
  22. video and case consultation on that client. 3h.15 min didactic 2hrs.45 min practicum 1hr

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 7 from 9:00-5:00

  1. Check-in via case consultation and start client videos*** (120 minutes all consultation) 9:00-11:00
  2. We will do a round robin with half the group asking each clinician to share something going well, something that didn’t go
  3. well and answer any consultation questions. We will start watching their client videos after that. We will give positive
  4. feedback, offer corrective action as needed and share additional ideas for the session as we watch the videos
  5. Break (15 minutes) 11:00-11:15
  6. Continue consultation via client videos (90 minutes all consultation) 11:15-12:45
  7. We will continue to watch their client videos and answering any questions and do the second half of the round robin
  8. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:45-1:15
  9. Future Template Protocol (120 minutes- 30 min didactic and 90 practicum) 1:15-3:15
  10. We will learn future template work (imaginal rehearsal of managing future events) via script, discussion, a client video

  15. the trainer brings for the group to make suggestions and then one of their own cases doing a round robin of suggestions.

EMDR THERAPY COURSE DAY 8 from 9:00-5:00

  1. Case consultation and client videos (90 minutes all consultation) 9:00-10:30
  2. We will do half the group in a round robin and ask what’s going well, what’s not going well and answer any questions.
  3. Then, continue with client videos.
  4. Break (15 minutes) 10:30-10:45
  5. Case consultation and remainder of client videos (90 minutes all consultation) 10:45-12:15
  6. We will do the round robin with the other half of participants and finish any remaining videos. If there’s no more videos
  7. then, instructor will do a live demo or fill in with other activities we didn’t get to.
  8. Lunch (30 minutes) 12:15-12:45
  9. Review phases 1 & 2 of EMDR and Recent Events Protocol (120 minutes- 60 minutes didactic and 60 practicum) 12:45-

  11. We will review phase 1 (structure of a session, things that need to be done in phase 1, etc.) and phase 2 (relaxation and
  12. resource tools, education, presenting more to the client about EMDR, etc.). We will also review the script for Shapiro’s
  13. EMDR Protocol for Recent Events (events occurring within three months of utilizing EMDR) and a summary of two other
  14. recent event protocols will be given. We will practice recent events protocol then, show a client video. 
  15. Break (15 minutes) 2:45-3:00
  16. Continue review phases 3-8, go through EMDRIA assessment and do a case consultation (120 minutes- 60 minutes
  17. didactic and 60 consultation) 3:00-5:00
  18. We will continue with review of the 8 phases- 3-8 (via discussion, playing the Jeopardy Game and a client video if time
  19. permits. Then, we will have participants fill out the case consultation form on a client of theirs and discuss the case. We
  20. will also go through the EMDRIA 45 question assessment questionnaire. We will have a graduation ceremony!
  21. Total time for today is 4 hours consultation, 2 hours didactic and 1 hour practicum = 7 hours                                                            
  22. Total time- Didactic = 22.75 hrs.     Practicum = 22.25 hours.     Consultation = 11 hours. Total = 56 hours (56 CEs).
