Recorded webinar.
Many veterans and all military families receive care outside of their local VA. It is critical that non-VA behavioral and mental health professionals understand the ethos of military culture, treatment modalities, and available resources that will benefit this population. This workshop is designed to provide non-VA professionals with an introduction to military culture and the psychosocial needs of military families from a trauma-informed perspective. An overview of trauma-informed and culturally competent assessment, treatment models, and appropriate resource referrals will be presented. Case presentations will be used to demonstrate clinical skills.
For this workshop, the broad definition of military families is used to address active military, veterans, and family members. All groups will be discussed during the presentation.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the military culture and how it applies to working with military families
2. Describe the prevalence of psychosocial needs of military families
3. Perform trauma-informed and culturally competent assessments of military family members
4. Discuss appropriate treatment models and resource referrals for military families
Research: A number of evidence-based models have been found to be effective when working with the veteran population. Information can be found on Treatment Works for Vets and the Veterans Affairs websites. Information on current and ongoing research can be found on the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center website.
Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.
