Part 1: Defining the Impact of Working with Trauma

The goal of the workshop is to identify concepts of trauma, recognize vulnerability and apply these definitions to analyze their own risk. Time will be spent exploring the dynamics of a vicarious trauma “normally” experienced compared to during a crisis experienced globally, such as that experienced during COVID-19.  Participants will work on formulating a plan of action to assess the impact of these concepts on their own practice.

Part 2: Measuring the Impact of Working with Others

The goal of the workshop is to be able to demonstrate a general understanding of the physiological and psychological responses to different types of stressful stimuli. To ensure optimal client care it is important for therapists to monitor and maintain their own mental health. There are a variety of tools to assess this, and one measure is the Maslach Burnout Inventory.  This measures six areas of work life as well factors of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment.  Participants will have the opportunity to use research validated measures to assess their individual profile, identify factors that drive burnout and develop strategies to address this.

Part 3: Transformation to Vicarious Resilience

Participants will have the opportunity to identify resilience- and strength-based clinical models and identify and assess their own vicarious resilience through a self-assessment tool. There will be a focus on the 7 possible dimensions of vicarious resilience.  Participants will be given time to develop a plan to evaluate their own resilience and use these tools on an ongoing basis. Finally, the training will explore ways participants can use their vicarious resilience to promote resilience informed therapy to their clients.
