Live in-person.


The delivery format for this training is a hybrid model. You can register for the Live In-Person Training or the Live Online Training. They will be held simultaneously.

This training is designed for those who provide clinical supervision to staff.  A solution-focused approach is especially effective with novice clinicians and student interns and has applicability to all levels of experienced staff.

Clinical work is one of the most difficult and demanding forms of emotional labor. Supervisors can feel overwhelmed by the stress of striving to meet the needs of clinicians with multiple learning styles and training needs, as well as attending to service urgency in various clinical environments. Traditional forms of supervision may feel uncomfortable, limiting, or frustrating, for both supervisees and supervisors alike.  How can we provide supervision that teaches, engages, and retains high quality staff?

Using solution-focused clinical supervision (SFCS) can greatly increase effectiveness of the supervision process, enhance supervisee judgment and decision-making, and decrease burnout amongst staff.  SFCS assumes that the wisdom is within your supervisees and you can help them focus their attention on areas of competence, strength, and possibilities. It is an approach that is consistent with strengths-based practices. This training will help supervisors to learn how to produce competent, positive, and energetic staff to provide high quality services to their clients.

You will be exposed to a solution-focused “recipe” for providing supervision to maximize your effectiveness in supporting the professional growth of staff.  Skills to enhance staff engagement, scripts for case conceptualization, and tools to reduce clinical burnout will also be presented. 

Learning Objectives:

• Describe two key differences between solution-focused clinical supervision and traditional clinical supervision approaches;

• Explain the four pillars of solution-focused supervision;

• Apply in clinical supervision, solution-focused questions to facilitate and teach case conceptualization skills to staff;

• Use “retirement party” exercise to move clinicians into a “marathon mindset”;

• Implement the “Dream Management” protocol to enhance clinician well-being and reduce burnout.

Research:

The solution-focused approach started as a form of brief psychotherapy developed by Insoo Berg and Steve De Shazer (www.sfbta.org). Solution-Focused Group Therapy is listed as an evidence-baesd approach on the SAMHSA NREPP website. It has expanded with the use of its principles applied to supervison in corporate management  and coaching settings, as well as in human services. Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, medical professionals, and other interested individuals who currently provide clinical supervision or plan to move into this type of position.

Daniel Lawson, LMHC, currently works in private practice in Buffalo, NY. Dan is a passionate, eclectic practitioner and bases his practice heavily on a solution-focused approach to therapy. As a result, many of his clients see the results they are looking for in less than six sessions. Dan also uses DBT, positive psychology, mindfulness, CBT, existential, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy. Dan provides clinical supervision grounded in a solution-focused approach. In addition, he also specializes in supporting Catholic men and woman, effectively combining his faith with his psychological training to provide therapy deeply rooted in Catholic theology and philosophy. The cancellation and refund policy below applies to individual courses. Up to 3 CEs/Contact Hours

  • Up to 30 days prior to the training date refund will be issued in the form of (1) a gift card in the full payment amount OR (2) a refund to the original method of payment minus a $25 processing fee

Online Self-Study Training

  • Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards

Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Loyalty Reward Points

  • Participants who request a refund will forfeit any Loyalty Reward Points they may have received from that purchase.
  • Participants who request a refund on a purchase paid for with Loyalty Reward Points will have those rewards credited back to their account within 5 business days of the refund being processed.

Substitute Attendance

If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Check Refund

Any refund requests for a check payment may take up to 4 weeks to process.

UB Cancelled Trainings

  • If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full.
  • Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed trainings and workshops may still be taking place.
