Description

Course Format

In-person workshop.

This course will focus on the trajectory of serious illness and the accompanying experience of grief.  Throughout the course students will utilize a life course perspective, discussing the impact of not only age but also developmental stages (individual and family), race, culture, ethnicity, and overall social context.  Incorporating a trauma-informed and human rights perspective, students will increase their knowledge, assessment skills, clinical skills, and self-awareness, in order to best serve this population in various practice settings.

Learning Objectives:

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the different trajectories of physical and mental illness.
  2. Differentiate the relationship between life stage development and differing types of serious illness and loss.
  3. Identify and assess differing responses to various types of loss including death, relationships, illness, disability, and violence.
  4. Describe the impact of culturally competent care on seriously ill individuals and their families or those experiencing loss.
  5. Analyze the psychosocial dynamics that add to complex grief, disenfranchised grief, and ambiguous loss.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding between trauma and loss.
  7. Apply a trauma-informed human rights perspective to working with individuals and families touched by serious illness and/or loss.

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, substance use professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.
