Course Format

Live in-person: This seated offering is limited to 30 participants. *There is also an interactive live online option being offered at the same time. 


Clinical supervision is an essential skill for all professionals in the field of mental health.  In our effort to improve the outcomes for those we serve, the direct supervision of our staff becomes all the more paramount.

If you have career goals of becoming a supervisor or are looking for ways to enhance your working knowledge of supervision or improve your effectiveness with staff, this training is for you.  Being concrete and pragmatic, this training will offer you dynamic foundational knowledge to begin mastering supervision at your workplace. 

During this training, participants will be given hands on applications, exercises, and real-world examples, all geared to enhance confidence in their practice of supervision.  Participants will learn how to use the material in this training to create their own clinical "compass" to keep their supervision on course throughout the supervisory relationship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the 3 stages of the supervisory relationship
  2. Discuss 7 foundational dimensions of the Systems Model of Supervision
  3. Explain "The curse of knowledge"
  4. Identify 3 skills of effective supervisors.

Daniel Lawson, LMHC, currently works in private practice in Buffalo, NY. Dan is a passionate, eclectic practitioner and bases his practice heavily on a solution-focused approach to therapy. As a result, many of his clients see the results they are looking for in less than six sessions. Dan also uses DBT, positive psychology, mindfulness, CBT, existential, motivational interviewing, and narrative therapy. Dan provides clinical supervision grounded in a solution-focused approach. In addition, he also specializes in supporting Catholic men and woman, effectively combining his faith with his psychological training to provide therapy deeply rooted in Catholic theology and philosophy. Dan is a balanced professional and works effectively with his clients regardless of their spiritual/religious beliefs.  Dan worked at Horizon Health Services for a decade where he worked to pioneer and implement best practices in clinical supervision before leaving to work full time in his private practice.  In addition to his clinical practice, Dan provides consultation services to local businesses, schools, and government agencies.  He specializes in conflict mediation and organizational development utilizing solution-focused methods to build optimal work cultures for all employees. Online Self-Study Training

Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards

Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Loyalty Reward Points

Participants who request a refund will forfeit any Loyalty Reward Points they may have received from that purchase. Participants who request a refund on a purchase paid for with Loyalty Reward Points will have those rewards credited back to their account within 5 business days of the refund being processed.

Substitute Attendance

If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Check Refund

Any refund requests for a check payment may take up to 4 weeks to process. 

UB Cancelled Trainings

If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full.

Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed trainings and workshops may still be taking place.
