Description

Description: Limited to 30 participants!

Embracing Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression is appropriate for both new and experienced social workers and human service professionals who are passionate about equity and inclusion, have a desire to do the hard (and often messy) work of becoming anti-racist, and seek to adopt a social justice lens.

It is designed and facilitated by a team of passionate, committed practitioners who represent diverse race, gender, ethnic, and orientation identities, and bring an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on training and expertise in coaching, diversity, equity, and inclusion work, leadership, sociology, organizational development, social work, creative problem-solving, neuroscience, and mindfulness.

Learning Methodologies: The program employs a variety of methodologies designed to engage individuals with diverse learning styles, including direct instruction, large and small group discussions, experiential activities, peer-to-peer learning, readings, podcasts and videos, and participant-led presentations.

Content: Through the course of the program, we will be exploring the many layers and facets of racism and oppression.

  • Historical and Contextual: Racism and Oppression from a Historical and Sociological Perspective
  • Individual: Identity, Privilege, Mindset, Trauma, Bias, Intersectionality
  • Interpersonal: Overt and Covert Aggressions, Gaslighting and Tone Policing
  • Institutional: Public Policy, Legislation, Organizational Systems and Structures
  • Systemic: Social and Cultural Norms, Colorism, Gender, and LGBTQIA+
  • Citizenship: Allyship, Action Planning

Structure: Participants will:

  • Complete the ThirdWay Anti-Racism and Social Justice self-assessment both prior to, and upon completion
  • Engage in 18 hours of face-to-face or virtual workshop time, structured to allow time for interim activities and small group work
  • Complete interim assignments, including readings, videos, exercises, and journaling activities
  • Engage in small groups to process learning and insights from workshop content and interim activities
  • Work in small groups to research and present on a topic of interest
  • Complete an Equity Action Plan and Allyship Journal

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the history, contexts, and key factors contributing to existing systems of inequity and injustice, and how they may impact our clients
  2. Examine our assumptions and beliefs; and those embedded in the cultures around us, and explore what they mean for our clients and for the coaching relationship
  3. Analyze organizational policies, procedures, systems, and structures through an Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive lens, both for ourselves and for our clients
  4. Apply the work of the program to specific social work competencies and examine how an Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive perspective informs the how we do our work
  5. Design equitable and inclusive cultures at the micro, mezzo and macro levels of your practice.
