Description

There is a great deal of variability in how ‘trauma’ is defined. This talk will present findings from several exploratory analyses that quantify how trauma is (or is not) defined across professional organizations’ websites, position papers, highly-cited scholarly articles,  books in the popular press, and as operationalized in trauma measures. Differences in defining trauma across cultures and languages will also be considered.  Implications for research and clinical practice will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Articulate differences among a variety of definitions of trauma, including the DSM, SAMSHA, NTSCN
  2. Differentiate between broad versus narrow definitions of trauma
  3. Explain the implications of the lability of trauma definitions for measurement, diagnosis, and access to treatment.

Research:  This presentation considers information from websites, position statements, Scholarly articles on trauma, popular press, and clinical trauma measures to inform the current research study and future studies.

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.

Associate Professor


Mickey Sperlich, an associate professor, is an experienced midwife and researcher who studies the effects of trauma and mental health challenges on women's childbearing and postpartum experiences and outcomes. She originally became interested in research in order to better understand the needs of her midwifery clients who were trauma survivors. Her first research project culminated in the book "Survivor Moms: Women's Stories of Birthing, Mothering and Healing after Sexual Abuse," which was named the 2008 Book of the Year by the America College of Nurse Midwives. 

Sperlich has taken part in several trauma-focused perinatal studies and is co-author of a psychosocial intervention for pregnant survivors of abuse, the "Survivor Moms' Companion." She completed her PhD with a dual-title in Social Work and Infant Mental Health at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 2014. Sperlich is committed to developing and evaluating trans-disciplinary interventions to understand and address the sequelae of sexual violence and other trauma, particularly in relation to women's reproductive health and childbearing. Sperlich's research also examines the importance of a trauma-informed approach for positioning such interventions and fostering their success. Owing in part to its contribution to maternal mortality, a recent research focus includes looking at gun violence and how to better involve social workers in intervening to prevent such violence. 


Completion Requirements

This workshop requires individuals to participate in polls. Participants must attend the full 60 minutes to receive CEUs. No partial credit is awarded for partial attendance. 

Equipment Requirements

Required Hardware

- Speakers/headphones/earbuds OR access to a phone to call in to the Zoom room.


Strongly Encouraged Hardware
- Webcam or mobile device with a camera for interacting in course activities.


Internet Connection
- A stable Internet connection of 56K or greater is required. (However, please note that a 56K connection may degrade the quality of your experience.)

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Live Trainings (in-person and online) – Half and One Day: Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 10 business days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee.

Participants who cancel a half-day training (less than 5 hours) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Participants who cancel a one-day training (5 hours or more) less than 10 business days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Live Training (in-person, online and hybrid) – Multi-Day: There is a $50 non-refundable deposit for all multi-day trainings. Full payment is due by the start of training. Participants may cancel by contacting the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email up to 30 calendar days prior to a training and receive a refund or a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit.

Participants who cancel less than 30 calendar days prior to the training will receive a gift card minus a $50 processing fee and the $50 non-refundable deposit or a refund of 50% of their registration fee. No gift cards or refunds will be issued with 5 or less business days’ notice before the start of the training. There may be instances where a special workshop has additional cancellation rules and that will be stated in the workshop description.

Self-Study Training: Participants have up to 72 hours from purchase to contact the Office of Continuing Education by phone or email and request a refund for an online course.

Gift Cards: Gift cards can be used as payment toward future trainings. Gift cards expire one (1) year after being issued.

Substitute Attendance: If a registered participant is unable to attend a training and would like another individual to attend in their place the Office of Continuing Education must be called or emailed at least one full business day before the training. Substitution decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Late Policy: Participants should plan on arriving prior to the start of the training to allow time for sign-in, registration, and training introductions. Participants arriving 20 minutes or more after the scheduled start time or departing 20 minutes or more prior to the scheduled end time will not receive any Continuing Education Credit and/or certificates associated with the training.  

Check Refunds: Check refunds may take up to 4 weeks to process. 

UB Cancelled Trainings: If the Office of Continuing Education cancels a training, participants will be notified via email and refunds will be paid in full. Please be aware that if the University at Buffalo is closed the training may still be taking place. Please contact the Office of Continuing Education if you have any questions or concerns regarding whether or not a training is still being held.
