Advancements in Trauma Psychotherapies: An Exploration of EMDR Therapy and Other Approaches

This course will offer an in-depth exploration of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and other essential concepts in trauma psychotherapies. Designed for students seeking to deepen their understanding beyond general brief counseling models, the course provides an examination of trauma-focused interventions, modalities, and delves specifically into the application of EMDR therapy in clinical practice. Individual clinician readiness, interest, and therapeutic fit will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Consider personal attitudes and biases related to trauma and trauma treatment and explore ways to enhance cultural humility and sensitivity in clinical practice.
  2. Explain updates in neuroscience supporting a more somatic/whole person approach to trauma psychotherapy.
  3. Describe the theoretical foundations of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and its application in trauma treatment.
  4. Recognize the history and development of EMDR therapy, including its evolution as a specialized treatment for trauma.
  5. Describe current research trends and emerging advancements in trauma psychotherapies, including the integration of EMDR therapy with other modalities.           
  6. Compare and contrast EMDR therapy with other Evidence-Based trauma psychotherapies, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
  7. Analyze selected case studies and develop Evidence-Based interventions and treatment plans for theoretical clients with trauma-related disorders.

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, case managers, and other interested individuals.

Laurie M. Belanger, LCSW-R

Laurie M. Belanger, LCSW-R has been providing services to children, adults, and families for over 20yrs in Western NY. She is passionate about serving the needs of families coping with multi-layered, complicated concerns. Laurie has a strong interest and background in trauma, sensory development, chronic pain, adoption, mental health and neurodiversity. She is an approved EMDR Consultant through EMDRIA and was professionally trained in TBRI®️ (Trust Based Relational Interventions) by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. Laurie currently provides individual and family therapy and professional consultation in her private practice setting in East Amherst NY. She includes access to some of the most up to date trauma therapies and supports in her practice. Included in this is The SSP (Safe and Sound Protocol), a Polyvagal informed, evidence-based therapeutic tool designed to reset the nervous system and return it to safety. Laurie has worked with school districts, hospitals, foster care/ adoption agencies, direct service mental health providers and has presented at professional conferences for a diverse group of professional disciplines on her passion for safely combining deeply sensory oriented, trauma informed materials and supports into diverse settings successfully. She is dedicated to providing cross discipline education to the community so that professionals, both in & outside of the trauma therapy field might have access to the most up to date, evidence-based knowledge to add to their own fields of service.
