Working with First Responders: Cultural Competency and Risks (Self Study)

Description: Participants will take an expansive look into the First Responder roles, requirements, training, occupational hazards, and complex cultural norms to foster increased confidence in the provision of mental health support services to First Responders and their family members. Participants will explore current data that supports the importance of early identification of primary and secondary stress symptoms, including suicide risk, as well as resources for safety planning. Additionally, clinician traits that foster increased likelihood of success in the engagement phase of treatment will be identified. An opportunity to interface with a panel of first responders for a lived experience Q & A will conclude the presentation.

Denise Fuller, LCSW-R is a licensed Clinical Social Worker, who has been in practice for over 25 years and dedicates her time to supporting military, first responders, and their families. She is the owner of Solutions Counseling Services of Buffalo as well as a retired Army veteran with experience in Military Police and Combat and Operational Stress Control. Prior to establishing her own practice in 2012, she also engaged in clinical and administrative roles in community mental health services and the NYS Office of Mental Health at Southport Correctional Facility, a former maximum security State prison. Ms. Fuller is a Certified First Responder Counselor (CFRC) and Certified EMDR Therapist & Consultant. Ms. Fuller volunteers as the Coordinator for the WNY Humanitarian Assistance Program/Trauma Recovery Network and has also volunteered as a member of the Steering Committee for the WNY Trauma Collaborative.
