Solution-Focused Clinical Supervision: An Empowering Approach for Supervisors and Supervisees

Description: This training is designed for those who provide clinical supervision to staff.  A solution-focused approach is especially effective with novice clinicians and student interns and has applicability to all levels of experienced staff.

Clinical work is one of the most difficult and demanding forms of emotional labor. Supervisors can feel overwhelmed by the stress of striving to meet the needs of clinicians with multiple learning styles and training needs, as well as attending to service urgency in various clinical environments. Traditional forms of supervision may feel uncomfortable, limiting, or frustrating, for both supervisees and supervisors alike.  How can we provide supervision that teaches, engages, and retains high quality staff?

Using solution-focused clinical supervision (SFCS) can greatly increase effectiveness of the supervision process, enhance supervisee judgment and decision-making, and decrease burnout amongst staff.  SFCS assumes that the wisdom is within your supervisees and you can help them focus their attention on areas of competence, strength, and possibilities. It is an approach that is consistent with strengths-based practices. This training will help supervisors to learn how to produce competent, positive, and energetic staff to provide high quality services to their clients.

You will be exposed to a solution-focused “recipe” for providing supervision to maximize your effectiveness in supporting the professional growth of staff.  Skills to enhance staff engagement, scripts for case conceptualization, and tools to reduce clinical burnout will also be presented. 

Learning Objectives:

• Describe two key differences between solution-focused clinical supervision and traditional clinical supervision approaches;

• Explain the four pillars of solution-focused supervision;

• Apply in clinical supervision, solution-focused questions to facilitate and teach case conceptualization skills to staff;

• Use “retirement party” exercise to move clinicians into a “marathon mindset”;

• Implement the “Dream Management” protocol to enhance clinician well-being and reduce burnout.


The solution-focused approach started as a form of brief psychotherapy developed by Insoo Berg and Steve De Shazer ( Solution-Focused Group Therapy is listed as an evidence-baesd approach on the SAMHSA NREPP website. It has expanded with the use of its principles applied to supervison in corporate management  and coaching settings, as well as in human services. In 2005, Insoo Berg co-authored a book on applying SF to coaching: Brief Coaching for Lasting Solutions. A listing of research on SF supervision can be found at:

Target Audience: social workers, mental health practitioners, creative arts therapists, marriage and facility therapists, psychologists, addiction professionals, medical professionals, and other interested individuals who currently provide clinical supervision or plan to move into this type of position.
