Trauma-Informed Care: Working with Children, Youth and Service Providers in the Education System
Original Recording Date :

Course Format

Hybrid: Recorded video online activity and reading-based online activity.

This online course is an elective course in the Online Trauma-Informed Organization Certificate Program: Basics for All Staff that was created by the University at Buffalo School of Social Work’s Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC).

It is well-established that students who experience trauma are more likely to have increased absenteeism, outsized reactions to everyday classroom situations, lower academic performance, more suspensions and expulsions, and higher rates of behavioral referrals than students who do not endorse experiencing trauma. School systems that make efforts to implement trauma-informed and trauma-responsive educational practices support a myriad of positive experiences and outcomes at the individual, family, school, and community level that, in turn, contribute to building resilience, fostering growth, and optimizing wellness at all of these levels. This course offers a foundation of information regarding implementing Trauma-Informed Care in ways that support such experiences and outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the impact of trauma and re-traumatization on learning and behavior
  • Explain how Trauma-Informed Educational Practices can be used to support all students
  • Identify strategies that can be used to ensure safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment
  • Explain how Trauma-Informed Educational Practices relate to other school district initiatives
  • Create next small steps to be more trauma-informed in one’s role

Target Audience:  This course is appropriate for all staff, volunteers, and others who engage with a school system -- including but not limited to principals, teachers, superintendants, nurses, bus drivers, school resource officers, custodians, paraprofessionals, administration, social workers, guidance counselors, aides, as well as school board and other committee members -- that seek further information on implementing a trauma-informed approach.
